Marine Activities MARA A153: Marine Basic Safety Training

This course is the basic safety training (BST) as specified by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Basic firefighting, personal survival, personal safety, social responsibility, and first aid in marine situations are covered in this hands-on program. In addition to the USCG curriculum, this course covers overboard recovery and emergency communications.

Students will be evaluated by demonstrating competency for personal safety, social responsibility, communications, safety of vessel, elementary first aid, abandoning ship and basic marine firefighting. In addition to demonstration of competency, there is an attendance requirement for U.S. Coast Guard certificate eligibility.

Students with satisfactory level of completion will be qualified for First Aid, CPR and USCG STCW-95 certificates.

16 weeks, 4 units

This course includes 24 hours of lab to be scheduled on 3 Saturdays at an offsite location for the fire fighting module. Those scheduled Saturdays are February 12, 19 & 26, 2011. Lab dates are subject to change.

Minimum 18, Maximum 24 students

Prerequisite:

Student must be able to swim 50 yards and tread water for 10 minutes.
