Marine Activities MARA A155: Navigation for Deckhands

Learning navigationThis course prepares the deckhand for safe and competent operation of vessels entering and leaving harbors, steering to a compass course and avoiding collision. Basic navigation skills, marine communication with VHF radio, electronic instrumentation and lookout responsibilities are introduced.

The student will be able to:

  1. Use electronic instrumentation to locate position on chart and identify course & distance to destination.
  2. Identify channel markers for entering & leaving a harbor, recognize when vessels are coming together and identify right of way and collision avoidance.
  3. Display radio communication skills commensurate with industry standards.
