Basic Cruising Certification

Basic Cruising CertificationBasic Cruising is the second step in the US SAILING Keelboat Certification System and builds on the sailing, seamanship and safety skills you learned while getting your Basic Keelboat Certification.

This course is for students who have passed the Basic Keelboat Certification and completed Basic Cruising 1.   Course topics will include boat systems, radio operation, maneuvering under power and sail, sail changes under way, reefing, crew overboard, safety at sea, heavy weather techniques, course plotting and steering by the compass.  Students who successfully complete this course and receive a passing grade on the written test will receive a US SAILING Basic Cruising Certification.

Once certified, you will be able to skipper an auxiliary powered keelboat up to 30' in sight of land in moderate wind and sea conditions.
