Powerboat Training

Powerboat Courses

Powerboaters of all ages in California as of January 1, 2025:

All motorized vessel operators are now required to complete a boating safety course and obtain a California Boater Card before heading out on the water. For more information about the California Boater Card program, list of approved courses and exemptions, please visit CaliforniaBoaterCard.com.

Why is Safe Boating Education in California Important

U.S. Coast Guard boating accident data shows that states with some form of boating safety education have fewer accidents and fatalities than states without any boater education requirements.

California law says no one may operate a boat, water skis, an aquaplane or other vessel in a way that will be dangerous to people and property.
