Introduction to Sailing – First Sail
Prerequisite: No prior experience needed. Participants must be 13 years of age or older on the first day of class, and able to swim 50 yards. Participants age 13 to 16 must be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age or older.
First Sail is a great way to experience sailing for the first time. You and up to two other students will join our instructor on board a keelboat, and work together to rig and sail the boat learning basic sailing skills including steering, sail trim, and rules of the road. First Sail is an ideal place to start whether you intend to continue your sailing education or not. Receive a $25 discount on a Beginning Sailing class if you sign-up within 30-days of participating in a First Sail.

Beginning Keelboat Sailing
Prerequisite: No prior experience needed. Participants must be 14 years of age or older on the first day of class and able to swim 50 yards.
Learn to sail on beautiful Newport Harbor in this 12-hour class designed for those with little to no sailing experience who want to learn how to sail on a larger more stable keelboat. Through classroom instruction and on-the-water practice you will learn the fundamentals of how to rig and safely sail a J/22 keelboat. The class is also a great refresher for those who have not sailed recently, or for dinghy sailors transitioning to the keelboat.
Sailing a J/22’ keelboat you will learn: Boating Safety, knots, rigging, sailing theory, boat handling, docking, sail trim and crew overboard recovery.

Explore the J/22 Keelboat
Prerequisite: Intermediate sailing skills. Must be able to swim 50 yards
For sailors with intermediate sailing skills, but with no prior experience sailing a J/22 keelboat. You will review rigging, docking, crew work and more as you get ready to take your sailing to the next level, and jump into an Intermediate or Advanced J/22 Keelboat class. This class is also recommended for sailors interested in renting the J/22. Your instructor will be able to assess your skills and let you know if you are ready to take the written test, or if you need more practice. You must be 18 years old, and earn a passing grade on the written exam in addition to passing a skills assessment to be able to rent at Marina Park.

Intermediate Keelboat Sailing
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Beginning Keelboat Sailing or equivalent experience. Participants must be 14 years of age or older on the first day of class and able to swim 50 yards.
For students ready to take the next step after completing the Beginning Keelboat Class. In this 14-hours class you will build on basic skills and learn the finer points of boat handling and sail theory while learning to work as part of a team on the J/22.
Sailing a J/22 Keelboat you will learn: Rigging, docking, sail trim, sail controls, crew work and communication, reefing and anchoring

Advanced Keelboat Sailing
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Keelboat Sailing or equivalent experience. Participants must be 14 years of age or older on the first day of class and able to swim 50 yards.
A great class for competent sailors interested in learning advanced boat handling skills. The focus of this class is on learning how to use the spinnaker, advanced sail trim and helm control
Sailing a J/22 Keelboat you will learn: How to rig and use a spinnaker, sail trim and shape, crew work, true and apparent wind.
