Administrative Support

The Waterfront Campus is hiring part-time administrative staff to support students and staff at the Professional Mariner Training Center. We are individual with a love for the ocean and boating. You must enjoy helping people, sharing what they know with others, and have great customer service skills to help the registration team in the our offices at the Professional Mariner Training Center and/or Sail. Depending on experience, interest, and program needs, these positions may extend longer. Assistant Sailing Instructors

We are looking for outgoing and enthusiastic individuals to join us as Assistant Sailing Instructors. No prior experience needed, but prior sailing or camp experience preferred. This position supports instruction to beginning-level adult and youth sailing classes. Classes and activities may include (but are not limited to): basic sailing, boat handling, launching and docking, knot tying, basic boat maintenance, rigging/de-rigging boats and stewardship of the marine environment. Other responsibilities include assisting with maintenance of program equipment, set-up at the beginning and end of class.

Camp Counselors

We’re looking for outgoing individuals who enjoy spending time outdoors supporting youth programs. No prior experience needed, but prior sailing or camp experience preferred. Camp counselors will teach and supervise camp activities in an aquatic environment. Counselors are responsible for all aspects of camp programs operations including but not limited to supervising and ensuring the safety of campers, teaching and operating camp activities, setting up and cleaning up equipment, and providing outstanding customer service. Camp program activities occur both on land and on / in the water. The primary work will occur during summer; however, camp programming occurs in spring and fall seasons as well.

Camp Support

We’re looking for outgoing and enthusiastic individuals to assist in organizing camp materials, student paperwork, student registrations, sign-in/sign-out, equipment and supplies, and other camp logistics. Camp support employees may also perform dock duties. No prior experience needed, but prior boating or camp experience preferred.

Part-time Dockmaster

We’re looking for individuals with prior boating experience to support our classes and programs, assist with rentals and perform basic maintenance. We offer competitive hourly wages and a flexible schedule.

Powerboat Instructor(s)

We’re looking for experienced powerboaters who enjoy people and sharing what they know with others. Prior teaching experience is required, and a US Powerboating Instructor Certification is desired, but not required. Powerboat Instructors teach varying levels of powerboating skills to a wide variety of adult and youth students, including students with disabilities, in a community boating class environment. Duties include classroom and water-based instruction, operation of boats 13’ to 55’, and managing registration and certification paperwork. Must have a passion for boating and the environment. Must have a positive, enthusiastic and flexible attitude. Must possess strong problem-solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.

Sailing Instructors

We’re looking for experienced sailors who enjoy people and sharing what they know with others. Prior teaching experience is required, and a US Sailing Instructor Certification is desired, but not required. Sailing Instructors teach varying levels of sailing skills to a wide variety of adult and youth students, including students with disabilities, in a community boating class environment. Part-Time Instructor for USCG Approved Courses

The Mariner Career Advancement program at the OCC Waterfront Campus is growing rapidly and we are on the lookout for new instructors to join the team on a part-time, flexible basis.

Mariner Career Advancement courses are USCG approved and include Basic Safety Training (First Aid, Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities), Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW), Radar, 100 Ton License Preparation, and hopefully in the next year, Able Seaman.

Instructors must meet USCG requirements to be approved to teach our courses. Specific requirements for each class are included below. In addition, all instructors must take a USCG-approved Train the Trainer or have significant similar experience.

Instructor Qualifications (reference NVIC 03-14 CH-1):

Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch Program (A-STCW II/4)

At least one year of experience as OICNW on vessels of 200 GRT/500 GT or more or equivalent military experience.

Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1)

At least one year of shipboard experience as a deck officer on vessels of at least 200 GRT / 500 GT or other shipboard experience in a capacity with responsibility for operation, testing, and maintenance of survival equipment, conducting of abandon ship drills; and the training of passengers and/or crew in lifesaving equipment and procedures. Equivalent military experience in a deck rating of Boatswain Mate or a Survival or Rescue Swimmer is also acceptable.

Basic Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2)

At least one year experience as deck or engineering officer on vessels of at least 200 GRT/500 GT; or equivalent military damage control experience, or experience as a professional fire fighter.

First Aid & CPR (STCW A-VI/1-3)

Hold a current certification as a First Aid and/or CPR instructor from nationally recognized medical training organization; or be an EMT, Nurse or Medical Doctor; or have experience as a military Hospital Corpsman.

Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (STCW A-VI/1-4)

At least two years shipboard experience on vessels of at least 200 GRT / 500 GT.

Radar Observer (Unlimited)

Hold or have held an officer endorsement for near coastal or oceans and have at least one year experience using radar as the OICNW on vessels of at least 200 GRT / 500 GT or equivalent military experience.

Master 100 Less Than Tons (Exam)

Experience as Master on vessels of at least 25 GRT or equivalent military experience.

Assistance Towing (Exam)

Hold a commercial assistance towing endorsement or an officer endorsement authorizing assistance towing service, or have equivalent towing experience

Auxiliary Sail (Exam)

Experience as Mate or Master on sail vessels or substantial sailing experience.

ECDIS (STCW A-II/1; A-II/2; A-II/3)

Experience using ECDIS as OICNW on vessels of at least 200 GRT / 500 GT or equivalent military experience.

Marine Maintenance Assistant

We’re looking for individuals to support our maintenance team with a variety of routine boat and dock maintenance duties. Duties may include, but are not limited to wash down of boats, wipe down of boat interiors, assist with oil changes and other engine room maintenance tasks, prep and sand surfaces in preparation for varnish and/or paint, clean and repair vessels and facilities following classes and events, trash and recycling management, polish stainless.

No prior boating experience needed, but prior experience with equipment or facility maintenance preferred. We offer competitive hourly wages and a flexible schedule.

Professional Mariner Part-Time Faculty

Orange Coast College is seeking part time faculty to support for-credit USCG courses taught in Newport Beach, CA. Part time faculty provide quality instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines. Part time faculty are responsible for creating and maintaining an environment which emphasizes teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests and issues.

Opportunities exist for faculty to teach RFPNW using the Bridge Simulator, USCG Masters License (100 Ton) exam preparation, Sailing, and Yacht Keeping & Engine maintenance.
